Merz warns of the end of "Pax Americana": US protection of Europe no longer exists

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a speech delivered at the Congress of the Christian Social Union (CSU), warned of the end of "Pax Americana", what is considered the US's protection of Europe, urging European nations to prepare for changing transatlantic ties and to strengthen their defense independently.
"The decades of Pax Americana for Europe and Germany are largely over for us. It no longer exists as we knew it. Nostalgia will not help us, and I would be the last person to give in to this nostalgia. This is a reality! The Americans are now very fiercely defending their interests. And that is why we must now defend our interests," Merz said.
He warned Europeans that Washington's strategic priorities have changed for years.
“Trump did not appear overnight, nor will American policy change overnight. ‘Pax Americana,’ meaning long-term peace, is the order established after World War II, under which the United States guaranteed European security.”
Merz also spoke out against making too many concessions to Moscow in efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine, arguing that this would only strengthen the Kremlin's ambitions.
He said Russian President Vladimir Putin would not stop in Ukraine, warning of efforts to redraw Europe's borders and reassert control over former Soviet territories, posing long-term threats to European security.
