Von der Leyen and Costa evaluate US-Iran ceasefire

EU officials have joined the group of politicians who have welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and the United States.

"I welcome the two-week ceasefire that the US and Iran agreed to last night. It brings a much-needed easing of tensions," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today.

"I thank Pakistan for its mediation," she wrote on X.

"It is now essential to continue negotiations for a lasting solution to this conflict," Von der Leyen added.

European Council President Antonio Costa called on all parties to implement the conditions in order to achieve lasting peace in the region.

"The EU stands ready to support continued efforts and remains in close contact with its partners in the region," Costa said in X, thanking Pakistan for its help in facilitating the agreement.

The bloc's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said the ceasefire was a step back from the brink of crisis after weeks of escalation.

“The ceasefire creates a necessary opportunity to mitigate threats, stop missiles, resume maritime transport, and create a space for diplomacy towards a lasting agreement,” Kallas wrote.

"The Strait of Hormuz must be reopened for passage," she added.

"The door to mediation must remain open, as the fundamental causes of the war remain unresolved," Kallas warned.

"The EU is ready to support these efforts and is in contact with partners in the region," she said.

Kallas is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia today.
