Trump-Meloni debate ignites the internet: Clash over popularity

The long-distance controversies between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have not ended.

"Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni repeatedly asked me to take a photo together during the G7 meeting in France. She is going through a difficult period in Italy in terms of her popularity, perhaps because she said no to the United States of America, a country that truly loves and protects Italy, when it came to preventing Iran from acquiring or developing a nuclear weapon (but so did NATO, for the sake of truth!).

"She did not even allow us to use Italian runways and airports, creating a major logistical obstacle, and this despite the fact that the US contributes hundreds of billions of dollars a year to defend Italy and other so-called NATO allies," Trump wrote.

"Now that the United States has militarily defeated Iran, it wants to be friends with us again to boost its popularity. No, thank you!" he wrote.

The reaction of Italian Prime Minister Meloni was also immediate.

"President Trump, these constant and unprovoked attacks are senseless.
As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped me, nor does it depend on my relationship with you. My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy's national interest, and that is precisely what I have always done," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to President Trump's statement.

"This is what I also did regarding the American military bases in Italy. Their use is governed by agreements that we have always respected and that cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister.
Italy remains a sovereign state," she added.

"In any case, my popularity is not your concern. I suggest you focus on your popularity ," Meloni concluded.
