US approves sale of $9 billion worth of Patriot systems to Saudi Arabia

The United States has approved the sale of Patriot air defense systems to Saudi Arabia, in a deal worth about $9 billion.

According to the official announcement, Riyadh intends to purchase a total of 730 Patriot systems, as part of strengthening its defense capabilities against air and missile threats.

US authorities stressed that the agreement aims to strengthen the security of Saudi Arabia, a key US ally in the Middle East, as well as contribute to regional stability.

The agreement is expected to pass for final consideration in the US Congress.
