Boris Pistorius: The role of a European military force for Ukraine depends on Russia

The role of a European military force for Ukraine depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said today.
His statement came a day after European leaders met in Berlin and proposed deploying a protection force to help secure a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
"When Putin says how he wants to proceed, then we will see what that might involve in detail," Pistorius said when asked what contribution Germany's armed forces could make.
Earlier, Russia has categorically rejected the deployment of foreign troops to monitor the ceasefire.
Pistorius said he broadly supported the idea of deploying European troops on the ground, but stressed that he had not been involved in the recent negotiations in Berlin, which, he said, had taken place within a narrow circle of leaders.
"At this stage, it's about Europeans – quite naturally – committing to sharing responsibility and getting involved at the negotiating table," Pistorius said.
European leaders proposed yesterday to create a protection force to help secure a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, following the conclusion of high-level talks in Berlin.
A joint statement said a European-led force, supported by the United States, would support Ukraine's armed forces and ensure the security of its airspace and maritime zones, including through operations inside Ukraine.
