A year after being overthrown from power, Bashar al-Assad returns to medicine! His family's luxurious life in Moscow

A year after the fall of his regime in Syria, Bashar al-Assad appears to have finally turned his back on politics and is trying to return to his original profession as a doctor, this time from exile in Russia.
According to the newspaper "The Guardian", which cites sources with knowledge of the Assad family's movements, the former Syrian president is attending ophthalmology courses at a university in Moscow.
A friend of the Assad family, who maintains regular contact with them, has stated that the former president is “learning Russian and refreshing his knowledge in ophthalmology.” According to the same source, this is a field that has always interested him and he is not returning to it for economic reasons, as “he clearly does not need the money.”
It is worth remembering that before the outbreak of the war in Syria, Assad occasionally practiced his medical profession in Damascus. Some observers estimate that the wealthy Russian elite could constitute his future clientele.
The Assad family is now reported to live a quiet and secluded but luxurious life, mainly between Moscow and the United Arab Emirates. Family friends, sources in Russia and Syria, as well as media leaks, describe the daily life of a once extremely powerful family that ruled Syria with an iron fist.
According to two sources familiar with their living conditions, the Assads are likely to reside in Rubliovka, one of Moscow's most expensive and secure areas, known as a haven for the Russian elite. The same area is also said to be home to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Kiev in 2014.
Despite Western sanctions imposed in 2011 after the violent suppression of protests in Syria, the Assad family has not faced financial problems. Much of its wealth was transferred to Moscow in time, where Western regulatory authorities could not touch it.
However, financial comfort no longer comes with political influence. According to Guardian sources, the family has completely cut themselves off from both the Syrian and Russian networks, where they had previously moved. The sudden escape from Syria is said to have left many of Assad's former allies unhappy, while Russian "managers" have banned him from contacts with senior figures of the former regime.
“ It’s a very quiet life,” says a family friend. “He has very little, if any, contact with the outside world. He only communicates with a few people who were part of his ‘court’, like Mansour Azzam (former minister of presidential affairs) and Yasar Ibrahim (former economic adviser).”

A photo on MGIMO's official website shows the 22-year-old among other graduates. In a separate, low-quality video, members of the Assad family are also seen in public, including Asma and her two sons, Hafez, 24, and Karim, 21.
The Assad children also frequently travel to the United Arab Emirates, with Asma accompanying them on at least one of these trips. Leaked flight records obtained by the Guardian for the period 2017–2023 show that the Emirates had long been a favourite destination for the Assad family, even when they were still in power. Karim and Hafez have made several trips between Abu Dhabi, Moscow and Syria, including flights in November 2022 and September 2023.
