At least 23 killed in southern Lebanon, Israel and Hezbollah accuse each other

At least 23 people have been killed in southern Lebanon by Israeli airstrikes, less than 24 hours after a new ceasefire was announced between Israel and Hezbollah.

According to local authorities, 16 people were killed in the Nabatieh district and seven others in the neighboring Saida region, while dozens were injured. Lebanese state media reported that among the victims was a family of four - parents and their two children - who were killed in the city of Barish.

The Israeli military said it had struck "dozens of Hezbollah targets" in southern Lebanon, saying the operation was in response to over 50 rockets and shells fired by the Shiite group at Israeli forces in the area.

Hezbollah, on the other hand, has rejected the ceasefire announced by US officials. A group official said the organization does not recognize the agreement and opposes any Israeli military operations inside Lebanese territory.

Senior Hezbollah official Hassan Fadlallah stated that the group has the right to respond to Israeli attacks, demanding that Israel fully respect the ceasefire and not launch new attacks or expand its military presence in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the United States has expressed concern about the continuation of military operations in Lebanon, warning that the tensions could jeopardize the recently reached peace agreement with Iran. According to reports, US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to hold talks with Iranian officials in Switzerland to consolidate the agreement.

Despite the announced ceasefire, clashes continue on the ground. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that on Friday alone 47 people were killed and 97 others were injured by Israeli attacks, while the Israeli army announced that four of its soldiers were killed.

The conflict continues to cause severe humanitarian consequences in southern Lebanon, where hundreds of thousands of people remain displaced and many communities have been devastated by the fighting in recent months.
