Orthodox believers celebrate Easter today

Orthodox Easter, also known as the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ, is the most important holiday in the Orthodox tradition and is celebrated with many religious rites and customs.
Thousands of believers head to churches across the country to commemorate the Resurrection of Christ, a symbol of hope, life and triumph over death. As the clocks struck midnight and the day of Easter approached, Orthodox believers greeted each other with the words: “Christ is risen!”, an expression followed by the response “Truly he is risen!”.
At the "Resurrection of Christ" Cathedral, the largest institution of the Orthodox faith in Tirana, the ceremony gathered, as every year, hundreds of citizens, creating a special spiritual atmosphere.
Believers lit their candles in the cathedral and took them with them to their homes, symbolizing receiving God's light.
On Orthodox Easter, previously dyed red eggs are shared with family and friends, which according to tradition are dyed with the "blood of Christ" on "Maundy Thursday" or the Saturday before Easter.
In addition to the religious dimension, Easter in Albania is closely linked to family customs. Dyeing eggs red, symbolizing the blood of Christ and new life, is one of the most widespread traditions. Families gather around the festive table, where there is no shortage of traditional dishes and an atmosphere of joy after a long period of fasting.
In different areas of the country, such as the south and southeast, special local rites are also preserved, which further enrich this celebration.
But Easter remains primarily a moment of reflection and hope, giving this holiday a special place in the life of every believer but also of the community.
The date of each Easter varies as the determination is based on the Julian calendar and the phases of the moon and usually falls after Catholic Easter.
