5,000 US soldiers leave Germany in retaliation for Trump, Berlin: We predicted it

5,000 American soldiers are leaving Germany. This is the result of the dispute between United States President Donald Trump and Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the war against Iran.
The US Department of Defense has made the withdrawal plan official, according to media outlets such as CNN and BBC. The decision comes just a day after Trump sharply criticized Merz, who declared that the United States had been "humiliated" by Iranian negotiators.
In his reactions on social media, Trump said that the German Chancellor is "doing a terrible job," and accused her of failures in immigration and energy policies.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed that the order to withdraw troops was given by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
According to him, the decision was made after a review of the US military presence in Europe and is expected to be implemented within the next 6 to 12 months.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the US decision to withdraw troops was predictable.
"That the United States troops would withdraw from Europe and from Germany was expected. We Europeans must take more responsibility for our security," he said in a reaction to the media.
Currently, the US has over 36,000 active troops in Germany, making it the largest American military presence in Europe.
A significant portion of them are stationed at Ramstein Air Base. Trump has also suggested the possibility of withdrawing troops from Italy and Spain, criticizing these countries for their lack of support in operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Pistorius stressed that the American military presence in Germany remains in mutual interest, as it serves as a collective deterrent, especially at a time when Russia's ambitions are perceived as a threat to Europe.
He also added that the United States uses its bases in Germany for operations related to security policy in Africa and the Middle East, including operations in Iran.
At the same time, Berlin has launched a broad program to strengthen its military, with the aim of responding to the growing threat from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine and reducing its dependence on the United States in terms of security.
Despite reductions since the end of the Cold War, the American military presence remains a key pillar of Germany's and NATO's security.
