Record haul in Spain! 40 tons of cocaine seized in the Atlantic Ocean

Spanish police have seized a record amount of suspected cocaine during an operation carried out in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Canary Islands, marking one of the biggest blows to international drug trafficking.

The operation was carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard, which stopped a ship in international waters, where around 20 people were arrested.

According to authorities, between 35 and 40 tons of cocaine were seized on board, which classifies this case as a "historic seizure" at the national level.

The ship, which is currently being inspected in the Canary Islands, is reported to have left Freetown, Sierra Leone, bound for Benghazi, Libya. Investigators suspect the drugs were destined to be transferred to smaller vessels for distribution to the European market.

Spain is considered one of the main entry points for cocaine into Europe, due to its links with Latin America and proximity to Morocco, one of the main producers of cannabis.

This seizure follows several previous major operations. In 2024, Spanish authorities seized 13 tons of cocaine in the port of Algeciras, while in January of this year another shipment of almost 10 tons was seized at sea.

Spanish authorities are continuing their investigations to uncover the full international trafficking network involved in this operation.
