Suspect arrested in Austria for contaminating baby food jars with rat poison

Authorities in Austria have arrested a man suspected of involvement in a serious poisoning case and attempted blackmail against the German baby food company HiPP.

According to the prosecutor's office in Eisenstadt, the suspect is a 39-year-old man, but authorities have not released his identity or the full motives for the incident.

Investigations show that several jars of baby food were contaminated with rat poison and distributed in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

A total of five suspected jars were found. In one of them, containing baby food with carrots and potatoes, investigators found traces of poison.

Police are continuing their investigations into another possible contaminated jar, while the case is considered serious due to the risk to children's health.

The HiPP company has been asked to draw attention to an external criminal attack and has stated that it is not a production problem.

According to the company, the case began after a threatening email was sent to a general address. Immediately after this, the police were notified and a special crisis management group was set up.

Authorities have not made public the demands of the suspected blackmailer.
