War in the Middle East, British Prime Minister Starmer: There will be no offensive operations against Iran from British bases in Cyprus!

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has assured his allies in Cyprus that RAF Akrotiri Air Force Base "will not be included" in the UK's agreement with Washington that allows the US to use the bases for "collective self-defence".

According to Sky News and other international media reports, the British Prime Minister spoke with the President of Cyprus after Iran targeted the joint UK-US base Diego Garcia with ballistic missiles.

In a statement, a Downing Street spokesman said:

“The Prime Minister spoke to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, this morning. The Prime Minister began by underlining that, as close partners and friends, the security of Cyprus was of paramount importance to the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister reiterated that RAF Akrotiri would not be included in the continuation of the UK’s agreement with the US to use UK bases in the collective self-defence of the region, including the degradation of Iranian missile capabilities.”

Meanwhile, the information from the Cypriot media was as follows:

"The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held a long telephone conversation today, Saturday, with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, following the latter's initiative, within the framework of the two leaders' regular contacts on geopolitical developments in the wider region. During the discussion, regarding the British Bases in Cyprus, President Christodoulides referred to both the problems that have arisen and the lessons learned from the management of the crisis so far. In this context, he presented a specific proposal for the start of relevant discussions."

"The British Prime Minister reiterated to the Cypriot President that the security of the Republic of Cyprus is fundamental to the United Kingdom and in this regard they have taken the decision to strengthen the means that will contribute to the preventive measures that have been taken. Keir Starmer reiterated that British bases in Cyprus will not be used in any aggressive military operation."
