British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has assured his allies in Cyprus that RAF Akrotiri Air Force Base "will not be included" in the UK's agreement with Washington that allows the US to use the bases for "collective self-defence".

According to Sky News and other international media reports, the British Prime Minister spoke with the President of Cyprus after Iran targeted the joint UK-US base Diego Garcia with ballistic missiles.

“The Prime Minister spoke to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, this morning. The Prime Minister began by underlining that, as close partners and friends, the security of Cyprus was of paramount importance to the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister reiterated that RAF Akrotiri would not be included in the continuation of the UK’s agreement with the US to use UK bases in the collective self-defence of the region, including the degradation of Iranian missile capabilities.”
