Merz softens tone towards Trump: Europe and the United States have common

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has insisted he will maintain close ties with Washington despite Donald Trump's plans to withdraw thousands of US troops.

Speaking on German television, Merz said he would not give up on transatlantic relations or cooperation with Trump, even though disagreements continue over the Iran war.

"It must be acknowledged that the US president has a different opinion from the German government on issues such as the Iran nuclear deal. However, Europe and the US have a common interest in working together to end this conflict," the chancellor said.

Asked about the deployment of US Tomahawk missiles in Germany, as promised by former US President Joe Biden in 2024, with the aim of strengthening deterrence capabilities until Europe develops its own capabilities, Merz said that this is currently not possible.

"The Americans don't have enough right now and, objectively, it is very unlikely that the US will surrender such weapons systems. But it is not too late. There is no limit to the American commitment to nuclear deterrence on NATO territory," Merz said.

Trump has said the US will reduce troops in Germany by more than 5,000. But Merz downplayed the move, saying the plan was not entirely new.
