US/ House of Representatives approves bill criminalizing gender transition for

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation that would criminalize the performance of gender transition treatments on minors, passing a bill sponsored by Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The measure passed the House of Representatives by a narrow vote of 216 to 211 on Wednesday. To become law, it would also need to be approved by the Senate, a step widely seen as impossible because it would require the support of a bipartisan coalition to advance.

The bill, titled the “Protection of the Innocence of Children Act,” seeks to impose penalties of up to 10 years in prison for “genital or bodily mutilation” or “chemical castration” of a minor. The text covers a range of medical interventions, surgeries, and the use of puberty blockers and hormones for gender reassignment purposes.

"Children are NOT experiments. Enough with the drugs. Enough with the surgeries. Enough with the permanent damage. We need to let children grow up without being manipulated by adults to make life-changing decisions," Greene said on X before the vote, urging Congress to "protect America's children."

The House action comes amid a broader push by U.S. President Donald Trump to overturn federal policies on transgender issues. Since returning to office, he has signed executive orders ending government support for gender transition procedures for people under 19 and directing federal agencies to withdraw policies that recognize gender identity beyond biological sex.

Trump has also ordered a ban on transgender people participating in women's sports at federally regulated events and has reinstated restrictions on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military. The Pentagon has since banned anyone with a current or past diagnosis of gender dysphoria from enlisting or continuing in service, with the Supreme Court upholding the ban.

In a speech to Congress in March, Trump also called on lawmakers to pass legislation "that permanently bans and criminalizes sex reassignment of children."
