"Albania is being run by a gang, the opposition has lost its identity", Besim Ndregjoni: The DP should not leave the prime ministership during the protest

Former candidate for the position of Ombudsman, Besim Ndregjoni, has made strong accusations against the political situation in Albania, during an interview in the News24 studio , describing the country as a "dictatorship dressed as democracy" and expressing deep disappointment with the political class, including the Democratic Party.
According to Ndregjoni, the political tensions and chaos are not caused by the opposition, but are the result of a system where the will of citizens is ignored. He stated that institutions have been put at the service of power, while justice functions only formally. “Human rights and freedoms are violated, Albanians have fallen into depression because of this crisis and this political class,” he said, adding that fear and violence are used as mechanisms of governance.
Ndregjoni accused that instead of building a state of law, a criminal state is being built. He referred to the statements of the justice system, according to which the AKSHI has been described as a criminal institution, as well as previous cases in the Municipality of Tirana, where, according to him, similar criminal structures have been identified. According to Ndregjoni, the police have also been put in the function of crime, making it impossible to talk about a peaceful and safe society.
In his political analysis, Ndregjoni emphasized that the traditional division between left and right no longer exists in Albania. "Unfortunately, today there is no left and right, but there are gangs," he declared, adding that the political class of the '90s has completely failed and has served Albanians two undemocratic political forces, in the service of power and imitating dictatorial models.
Ndregjoni also expressed deep disappointment with the Democratic Party, which he said is not showing a political identity and is following a populist line. He described the process for electing the People's Advocate as a "national shame", emphasizing that the DP should have shown gratitude to Albanian anti-communists. According to him, the selection of candidates over the years has shown political bargaining between the main forces.
He recalled that in 2001, the Socialist Party appointed as People's Advocate a former head of the dictatorship's Ministry of Interior, who was later approved by the DP for a second term, while in 2011 the mandate was given to Igli Totozan. As Albanians awaited the election of an anti-communist figure, Ndregjoni accused what he called an "immoral and unconscionable political force" of bargaining with the "party of crime."
In conclusion, Ndregjoni stated that he and his supporters will support the Democratic Party's protests only if the DP deputies who voted for the Prime Minister's candidate for Ombudsman resign. He added that support will continue even if the DP mobilizes citizens for continued protests in front of the Prime Minister's Office, but only if the opposition shows resilience and does not withdraw from political action.
