Withdrawal of US troops from Germany/Pre-war levels in Ukraine restored, details of Pentagon plan revealed

The withdrawal of about 5,000 United States troops from Germany is expected to return the American military presence to levels before the launch of the Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2022.

According to US Department of Defense data, 36,436 US military personnel were stationed in Germany as of last December, ranking it second only to Japan in the number of US troops outside US territory.

The Pentagon has not yet said whether the troops will return to the US or be redeployed elsewhere. Meanwhile, reports indicate that a long-range battalion planned to deploy this year will be canceled, reducing missile capabilities in Germany.

The deployment of US forces in Germany increased significantly in February 2022, when former President Joe Biden approved the deployment of 7,000 additional troops following the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Historically, the American presence in Europe has been much larger. During the Cold War, about 250,000 American troops were stationed in West Germany.

Currently, a significant number of American troops are also located in other European countries, such as Italy with over 12,000 soldiers and the United Kingdom with over 10,000.

There are about 4,000 US troops in Spain, while President Donald Trump has warned of the possibility of their withdrawal due to disagreements over the use of bases in the conflict with Iran.

Important US bases in Europe include Ramstein in Germany, Lakenheath and Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, Aviano in Italy, and Lajes Field in the Azores.

Meanwhile, the headquarters of the US European Command and the US Africa Command are located in Stuttgart, while the US Navy operates from important bases in Naples and Sigonella in Italy, underscoring Europe's strategic role in US global operations.
