Incinerator case/ Veliaj wins defamation trial against Italian citizen

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has won the court case against Italian citizen Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti regarding incinerators.

The trial was held in the Criminal Chamber of the Tirana General Jurisdiction Court, and at its conclusion it was concluded that the previous claims of Italian citizen Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti against Veliaj are untrue.

It is learned that the Italian diplomat himself admitted during the court process that he had no communication, relationship or meeting with Veliaj, either in Albania or in Italy.

Further acknowledging that the statements made in the media by him were motivated by claims of financial gain, this court decision dismisses the basis of the accusations which led to a verification process against Veliaj regarding the incinerator issue.

After the Italian citizen admitted the defamation and apologized, Veliaj's lawyers did not seek further punishment. "Our client's goal is the truth, not the punishment of people used for political warfare. This goal was achieved with the defendant's admission of guilt for defamation," they said.
