Netanyahu announces negotiations with Lebanon, Axios: Will be held next week in

Benjamin Netanyahu announced that negotiations with Lebanon would begin immediately, following talks with Donald Trump and White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, amid fierce disagreements over the scope of a Middle East ceasefire.

According to senior US officials, the White House envoy urged the Israeli prime minister to reduce the intensity of attacks on Lebanon and move forward with negotiations.

Tehran claims that Lebanon is included in the ceasefire agreement and accuses the United States and Israel of violating it, leaving open the possibility of withdrawing from peace talks or keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed. For their part, the United States and Israel deny that the agreement includes Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israel has significantly increased military operations in the 24 hours following the agreement, with raids that, according to Lebanon's Civil Defense, killed at least 254 people on Wednesday.

In a statement, Netanyahu said he had ordered the immediate start of direct negotiations with Lebanon, noting that the goal of the talks is to disarm Hezbollah and create conditions for peaceful relations between the two countries. At the same time, he expressed satisfaction with the Lebanese prime minister's statement on the need to demilitarize Beirut.

According to a senior Israeli official quoted by US media, direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon are expected to begin next week, with the first meeting to be held at the State Department in Washington.

The American side will be represented by the US ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, while Israel will be represented by its ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter. Lebanon will be represented by its ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamadeh-Moawad.
