The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, and the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari, gave a press conference from Korça, providing the first details from the investigations conducted into the serious incident in Lozhan i Maliqi, where the suspect Violand Braçellari shot and killed officer Enea Mekolli and wounded Edison Adrin during the action, before being injured himself.
Hita said that the Korça Police Directorate had itself evaluated the information about the much-wanted Braçellari and had not requested additional forces, while according to him, 40 forces, equipped with the necessary means, including bulletproof vests, participated in the action.
But he said that the Kalashnikov weapon used by the perpetrator unfortunately penetrated the bulletproof vest.
"There were 40 police forces in the operation, all protective conditions, with bulletproof vests, but the weapon used by the perpetrator was a Kalashnikov, which broke the bulletproof vest. The information was available to the Korça directorate itself, which evaluated and made the operational plan itself," said Hita.
The police chief said he had no knowledge of the action: "An exemplary police officer was killed and another was injured in the gun attack. I have ordered the Standards Directorate to investigate the procedure and why the Korça Directorate did not request assistance from RENEA. I had no knowledge of the operation."
