Israel and Lebanon agree to ceasefire

As a result of talks led by the United States, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire, the US State Department announced.
Israel and Lebanon have also agreed to work towards the creation of pilot areas in which the Lebanese Armed Forces would take exclusive control of the territory, excluding all non-state actors, the statement said.
These steps will facilitate progress towards a comprehensive peace and security agreement, Washington added.
Israel reaffirmed that its security and territorial integrity can only be guaranteed through the disarmament of Hezbollah and the destruction of its infrastructure throughout Lebanon, according to the statement. The two sides agreed to resume discussions within political and security channels during the week of June 22, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement.
Hezbollah is a militant group and political party that controls most of southern Lebanon. It is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union only blacklists the group's armed wing.
The US State Department said the US has agreed to continue facilitating communication between the parties.
All parties condemned Iran's attacks on countries in the region and its continued activities that undermine stability throughout the Middle East, the US State Department statement also said.
Before the ceasefire announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that any Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, would lead to "grave consequences and a full-scale resumption of the war."
His comments come as tensions are high over a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US - in place since April - tensions that have been fueled in part by ongoing fighting in Iran. /REL
