French government: Suspend farmers' protests at Christmas

French farmers' protests continue today, but union leaders have called for a "Christmas truce."
Protests have continued across France today, particularly in the southwest with the A20, A62, A9, A89, A63 and A64 motorways blocked.
Farmers in the north and east of France are also protesting, blocking roads including the A10, A41 and A84.
However, the blockades will be lifted in the coming days to prevent disruptions over Christmas.
"My wish is for a truce for Christmas. We are not here to disturb the French people," the president of the FNSEA union, Arnaud Rousseau, told FranceInfo today (December 19).
"The French must be able to travel to see their families in peace," government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon told RTL.
"We will not tolerate further blockades and will do whatever is necessary," she said, adding that police officers were authorized to remove them.
The protests were initially sparked by orders to cull herds of cows suffering from lumpy skin disease, but later expanded to cover wider grievances in the sector, including the Mercosur trade agreement between the EU and the South American trading bloc.
The impact of the French farmers' actions on the latter has not gone unnoticed, and the EU announced that a final vote on the agreement, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed to January 2026.
