Spain and Portugal on red alert, storm Leo arrives, schools closed for fear of flooding

Spanish and Portuguese authorities are preparing for the worst due to Storm Leo, suspending classes in some areas and warning against travel, just a week after deadly Storm Kristin caused widespread damage to the Iberian Peninsula.
Spain's state meteorological agency predicted that parts of the Sierra Grazalema in the south could experience rainfall equal to the amount that falls in a year.
Portugal has increased its level of preparedness and has deployed the armed forces to deal with the floods.
Police footage showed flooded fields in Jerez and Cortes de la Frontera in Spain, as well as roads and cars covered in water, as officers evacuated local residents.
Spain recorded 119.3 mm of rainfall in January, 85% more than the 1992–2020 average, making it the second wettest January of the 21st century, the Environment Ministry announced.
The regional government in southern Andalusia warned of a red alert, saying they could be on the verge of a major disaster.
