At least 21 dead in Morocco floods and storms

The death toll from floods and severe storms that hit the Moroccan city of Safi has risen to 21.

The adverse weather conditions caused significant damage, loss of life and disruption of transport in various parts of the country. Some coastal areas are flooded while heavy snowfall in the interior and higher regions temporarily disrupted traffic in many settlements.

According to the official Moroccan news agency MAP, local authorities published an updated assessment regarding the severe weather conditions and massive flooding that hit the region late yesterday evening.

The statement notes that 21 deaths have been recorded so far.

Authorities stated that search and rescue operations continue without interruption and that the necessary measures have been taken for security in the affected areas and that mobilization continues with the aim of providing support and assistance to citizens affected by the disaster.

It further states that coastal areas are experiencing flooding and mudslides while inland and higher areas are experiencing heavy snowfall. A total of 16 people have lost their lives due to flooding and cold weather conditions.
