Russia attacks Ukraine with drone barrages

Russia has fired dozens of drones into Ukraine overnight, in the latest series of attacks that are dimming hopes of an end to the war following last week's summit in Alaska between US and Russian leaders.

The Ukrainian military said it had shot down or intercepted dozens of drones, as Russia attacked the neighboring country with more than 50 on the morning of August 23.

It is unclear whether there are any casualties from these attacks.

The total number of drones and missiles was smaller compared to the attacks Russia carried out this week.

On August 21, a Russian strike also hit a US-owned factory in western Ukraine. The company reported that several workers were injured in the attack.

Ukrainian emergency officials said on August 23 that firefighters had managed to extinguish the fire at the factory.

Meanwhile, Russia said Ukraine had launched dozens of drones against Russian targets overnight, claiming most of them had been shot down.

Anger over the lack of progress since the summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska was evident on August 22 at the White House, when Trump signaled the possibility of hitting Russia with new sanctions if it refuses to sit at the negotiating table.

Earlier, Trump said that a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was possible.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who had earlier described talks with European leaders as a "dead end", said no meeting was planned.

“Putin is ready to meet with Zelensky when the agenda for a summit is ready,” Lavrov told NBC News in an interview broadcast on August 22. “And this agenda is not ready.”

Meanwhile, Putin praised Trump, describing him as the "light at the end of the tunnel" for US-Russia relations.

“Our relations with the United States are at one of the lowest levels since the end of World War II,” Putin said during a visit to Sarov on August 22. “But, with the arrival of President Trump, I think there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he wants to see if Putin and Zelensky will meet before making a decision on new sanctions. He set a two-week deadline for making that decision.

"I'm going to make a decision about what we're going to do, and it's going to be a very important decision," he said. "Either it's going to be massive sanctions, massive tariffs, or both. Or I'm going to do nothing and I'm going to say, 'This is your fight.'"

Zelensky has meanwhile accused Russia - which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 - of doing everything to avoid a face-to-face meeting between him and Putin./ REL
