Why today will be the shortest day of our lives

Scientists say the Earth will spin slightly faster today, predicting that the 24-hour day will be shortened by 1.25-1.51 milliseconds.

According to TimeandDate , this is the forecast of the International Earth Rotation, Reference Systems Service and the US Naval Observatory.

It takes the Earth 86,400 seconds to make one complete rotation. A millisecond is 0.001 seconds. This change is so small that it won't have a big impact on everyday life.

Experts say it's the Moon's position that causes the shorter days, but they're not entirely convinced.

" The cause of this acceleration is not explained. Many scientists believe it is inside the Earth. Ocean and atmospheric models do not explain this acceleration ," says Leonic Zotov of Moscow State University.

The trend of short days has started in 2020.

In July 2020, there was a day that was 1.47 milliseconds shorter. Another day in June 2022 was shortened by 1.59 milliseconds.

Of course we don't even realize it yet, but scientists worry that shorter days could have long-term negative impacts.

Divergent forces could cause the ocean to move toward the equator, raising sea levels and flooding land. If the planet continues to accelerate, the 24-hour day could be shortened by two hours.

This would disorient the human biological clock and could cause catastrophic natural phenomena.
