EU criticizes Vetëvendosje, Europeans disappointed with non-certification of Serbian list for October 12 elections

The European Union has expressed disappointment over the non-certification of two Serbian political parties in Kosovo, the Serbian List and the Serbian Democracy, for the local elections on October 12.
In a statement, the EU expressed regret for the stance of the Vetëvendosje Movement.
" The EU is disappointed by the non-certification of two Kosovo Serb political parties. The stance of Vetevendosje during the certification process is regrettable. The inclusive character of the upcoming local elections is key to the future of relations between Kosovo and the European Union ," the reaction states.
According to the EU, the exclusion of any political actor runs counter to the principles of democracy. The EU has said it will continue to closely monitor developments.
Concerns about the CEC's decision were also expressed by QUINT member states and the EU office in Kosovo. In a response published this afternoon, QUINT called the decision to not certify an undermining of democracy.
The Serbian List is the main party of Kosovo Serbs. It maintains strong ties with Serbia, and its officials who are elected to Kosovo institutions have in many cases also held positions in parallel Serbian institutions that operate illegally in Kosovo.
The deputy leader of the Serbian List, Milan Radoićić, claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack organized in 2023 in Banjska, Zvečan, in which about 50 armed people participated. After the attack, he resigned from the party and is currently in Serbia.
