China creates 'robotic bees' for espionage

The device, which weighs less than the tip of a pencil, is attached to the back of a bee and connected directly to its brain via tiny needles. According to the researchers, in tests the device worked nine times out of ten and the bees followed the commands to turn left or right. The bee is half insect, half device.
The “robotic bees” could be used in rescue missions – or in covert operations as military reconnaissance. The small device could be equipped with cameras, eavesdroppers and sensors that allow the insects to collect and record information.
Because they are small in size, these bees can be used for covert military or security operations, entering tight spaces without arousing suspicion.
The technology was developed at the Beijing Institute of Technology. It works by sending electrical impulses to the insect's optic lobe - the visual processing center in the brain - which allows researchers to direct the bee's flight.
The study was recently published in the Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, the Telegraph reports.
Several other countries, including the US and Japan, are also racing to develop such bees.
