3 out of 4 European businesses depend on American technology to operate

A new analysis has found that around 75% of companies listed on European stock exchanges rely on US companies for essential technology services, including critical sectors such as banking and telecommunications.

The study, conducted by Swiss cloud provider Proton, analyzed over 9,600 companies through DNS lookups to identify the use of American platforms such as Microsoft and Amazon.

Nordic countries such as Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Finland and Sweden show a dependence of over 90% on American technology, while the countries with the lowest dependence are Bulgaria (16%), Romania (39%) and Slovakia (43%).

The report warns of the potential consequences of warrantless surveillance and foreign interference, particularly in the context of the US CLOUD Act, which allows authorities to request data from US companies, regardless of the location of the servers.

In Britain, critical sectors such as banking and telecommunications are over 95% dependent on American technology. Experts warn of national security risks and the need for Europe to invest in homegrown solutions to ensure digital sovereignty.
