Half of Europe's land affected by drought, worst-hit countries

A new wave of drought has gripped Europe and the Mediterranean region, with 52% of the land affected by early July, according to data from the European Drought Observatory. This is the highest percentage ever recorded for this period since 2012.

Eastern Europe is the most affected, with Kosovo, Serbia and Bulgaria experiencing the greatest impact – in some areas up to 100% of the territory. In Bulgaria, the drought has caused water supply disruptions for over 156,000 residents.

In Hungary, 47% of the land is at warning level, while in the Eastern Mediterranean, such as in Armenia (95%) and Turkey (77%), the situation has also been aggravated by fires.

In Syria, drought seriously threatens wheat production, putting over 16 million people at risk of food insecurity.

While Western Europe experiences a more mixed situation, France, Britain and partly Italy have reported significant increases in affected land, unlike Spain and Portugal, where the percentages remain minimal.

This new wave once again raises the alarm about the impacts of climate change and its consequences on food security and water supply.
