US-EU agreement confirmed: 15% tariff on drugs and cars

It took almost four weeks to reach an agreement, but now Washington and Brussels have issued a joint statement that seals the agreement on customs tariffs between the United States and the European Union.

The document is the fruit of a meeting in Scotland between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump.

Following the announcement of the agreement to impose tariffs of 15% on July 27, much uncertainty arose about the sectors and products included or excluded, the calculations of total tariffs, and reciprocal commitments. Particular attention was paid to the pharmaceutical and semiconductor sectors.

Today's meeting in Brussels of the EU Permanent Representatives Committee (CoRePer) produced a document that sets out the main points of the agreement, which will then be formalized into a legally binding text.

EU commitments: Investments, purchases of chips, energy and military equipment

As "La Repubblica" writes, the draft joint statement confirms the standard 15% tariff on European goods exported to the US, which will also be applied to the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors.

Among Brussels' main commitments are:

-Abolition of European tariffs on all American industrial goods;

-Confirmation of purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG), oil and nuclear energy products, with a total value of $750 billion by 2028;

-European companies plan to invest around $600 billion in strategic sectors in the US by 2028;

-The EU will buy at least $40 billion in artificial intelligence chips from American companies for its data centers;

-Increase in purchases of military and defense equipment from the US.

The EU will also offer preferential access to a wide range of marine and agricultural products from the US, including products such as:

-Nuts, pork and bison (North American wild ox),

-Fresh or processed fruits and vegetables.

US commitments: Pharmaceuticals and cars with 15% tariff

The White House has also announced the agreement on the joint statement. According to it:

From September 1, the US will only apply the tariff to:

-Airplanes and their parts,

-Natural raw materials not found in the US (such as carpet from Europe).

Furthermore, the US has guaranteed that the results of trade investigations under  Section 232 , which include pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber, will not lead to tariffs higher than 15% for the EU in these sectors.

The 15% tariffs will also apply to cars and their parts manufactured in Europe, if mutual US-EU technical standards are accepted and recognized.

The US also commits to increasing technology exports to Europe, provided that the EU increases its security standards.

The document also includes mutual commitments to:

-Removing non-tariff barriers, such as internal regulations, norms, safety and health standards;

-Negotiations for a mutual recognition agreement in the field of cybersecurity;

-Strengthening the protection of internationally recognized labor rights.
