The appearance of the US president, here's why Trump is always so orange

Donald Trump's face almost always looks made up, but it wasn't always like that. Even before his first term in office, US President Donald Trump had to endure a lot of comments about his orange skin.
As is often the case, the explanations of some experts and Trump's own reasons are very different. How does Trump himself explain the color of his skin, and what do experts believe is the cause?
Trump suffers from venous insufficiency. What does Trump himself say?
In a 2019 speech, Trump said of his cellulite: “The light is not good, I always look orange” — at the time, he blamed energy-saving light bulbs. In 2023, he complained about an indecent “big orange photo” of himself on Fox News.
Overall, the 47th President of the United States seems to value his skin color somewhat differently than the public: "I have whiter skin because I never have time to go out in the sun," he explained at a campaign event in Michigan in 2024.
In many photos, it's clear that Trump's face doesn't look uniformly orange: the lips and eye area are often lighter, and the color fades towards the ears and neck.
Where does the orange skin tone come from? The most common theory is that he uses self-tanning cream. Dr. Tina Alster, a dermatologist and medical advisor to the White House, was convinced in 2019: "He looks more orange than tanned."
However, she also said that his skin was already showing sun damage, which could also have come from artificial tanning, because natural sunlight consists of UV-A and UV-B rays.
To ensure that the desired tan develops particularly quickly, the dose of UV-A rays is artificially increased. The harmful UV-B rays are largely filtered out. This is why artificial tans look more orange than brown, and sunburns are rare.
Trump is also said to suffer from the inflammatory skin condition rosacea, and is taking antibiotics for it. Tanning and self-tanning products are particularly harmful to this skin condition. UV radiation from tanning beds can cause rosacea to worsen, while self-tanning products can further irritate the skin.
However, makeup artist Kriss Blevins, who has done makeup for every president since Jimmy Carter, confirmed to Fast Company: "Having done Trump's makeup a few times, I can tell you that his face — without makeup — sometimes looked bronzer than the rest of him. I think he uses self-tanner."
