Panic at Milan airport, 26-year-old sets fire to trash bin near terminal

A serious incident occurred this morning at Milan's Malpensa Airport where a 26-year-old man set fire to a trash can near the check-in area of Terminal 1, near Gate 13, causing panic among passengers.

Italian media reported that the flames spread quickly and black smoke filled the area. Passengers immediately fled the scene, which was captured in several videos posted on social media.

The arsonist was quickly apprehended by police and security personnel. He is a Malian citizen with regular documents and no criminal record.

Videos circulating online show the man, clearly distraught, being stopped and neutralized by law enforcement and airport staff at Milan airport.

Before setting the fire, the man from Mali had used a hammer to destroy a check-in counter in Terminal 1.

Firefighters evacuated the affected area as a safety precaution. Airport operations then resumed as normal.
