Tourist guide dies at work at the Colosseum in Rome, Confederation of Labor

A work tragedy has occurred in Rome where a tour guide, who fell ill while working at the Colosseum the day before, lost his life. According to Italian media, despite the rapid efforts of colleagues at the Archaeological Park, he could not survive.

The Italian General Confederation of Labor, while expressing condolences, criticizes the authorities for not suspending work but reopening the monument to the public immediately after the accident.

"While we await clarification on the cause of death, starting with her working hours and temperatures, we express our deepest condolences on the passing of Giovanna Maria and our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones ," a statement from the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) said.

The union explains that "this name joins the long list of people who have lost their lives at work and makes us responsible for keeping the spotlight on working conditions in the cultural world, which must necessarily change and improve."

The Italian General Confederation of Labor opposes the decision to reopen the monument immediately after the tragedy.

"In this tragedy, we regretfully note that, once again, when a person dies at work, work activities are not suspended," the union continues, noting that "we therefore condemn the decision to reopen the monument despite the tragic event. It is true that guided tours are booked by the public well in advance, but feelings of condolence should prevail over any event or initiative."

The Italian Ministry of Tourism also expressed condolences: "It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Giovanna Maria Giomarino, a tourist guide at the Colosseum, while carrying out her invaluable work."

Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè expressed her condolences to the family, friends and colleagues "who have lost a dedicated and passionate professional". "My thoughts are with all those who, like Giovanna, dedicate their lives to improving our cultural heritage. It is our duty to pay homage to their commitment by ensuring a working environment that respects their dedication and sacrifice."
