Israel's plan after Gaza invasion revealed

Israel has given final approval to a controversial settlement project in the West Bank, which will practically divide the territory in two and which Palestinians and human rights organizations say could destroy plans for a future Palestinian state.

The settlement development in the area called E1, an open space in east Jerusalem, has been discussed for more than twenty years but has been suspended due to pressure from the United States during previous administrations. On Wednesday, the project received final approval from the Committee on Urban Planning and Construction, after the last petitions against it were rejected on August 6.

If the process continues apace, infrastructure work could begin within months, while housing construction could begin within about a year. The plan calls for about 3,500 apartments to expand the Maale Adumim settlement, Finance Minister and far-right representative Bezalel Smotrich said Thursday during a press conference in the country.

Smotrich presented the approval as a response to Western countries that in recent weeks have announced their plans to recognize a Palestinian state.
