In 2021, the Democratic Party lost the elections by a margin of about 36 thousand votes to the Socialist Party. It was a result contested by the DP itself due to the phenomena of electoral manipulation, such as the Çyrbja case later verified by SPAK or the serious incident in Elbasan. However, even under difficult conditions, that result was later described as a "betrayal" and "sellout" by Berisha, who raised a storm, slandering the DP under the pretext of being "hostage" by Rama, SOROS and the US embassy.
Four years later, with more scandals and corruption affairs in the government, with a government hit from all sides by the Special Prosecution Office, the Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha has fallen into an electoral abyss that can no longer be hidden behind excuses: over 250 thousand votes minus Basha's result in 2021.
In the name of "sovereignty," a narrative was built that sought to "liberate" the DP from external influences and "overthrow" the "servants" of internationals in this party, but all of this ended in a ridiculous scene, with $6 million being paid for a US visa, which was never obtained, in the hope of restoring a perception that the Democrats have the support of the US in confronting Rama.
Berisha had promised not to involve the Democratic Party in his personal battle with the United States, but the DP soon became a function of personal interests through the signing of lobbying contracts, using the party's name and seal for purposes that had nothing to do with the political cause.
Ironically, in the name of “internal democracy,” a leader who was elected by vote was overthrown and replaced with a structure that produced successive appointments, without competition, without transparency, and with the same names that were once considered symbols of failure. Not to mention the mockery of the so-called ‘Primary’.
Compared to 2021, today the Democratic Party is not only more divided, but weaker and more unrepresented than ever before. It is more hopeless, unmotivated, and at a dead end, with no one daring to point the finger at the real problem.
If in 2021 it was claimed that the elections were "sold" by Basha, what happened in 2025, when Rama emerged stronger than he was? Who "sold" the elections this time?
Promises of powerful protests, which would no longer be "boulevard rides" like "in Luli's time", ended with candlelight vigils on the steps of the Prime Minister's Office. Meanwhile, thanks to this "revolution", Edi Rama has 83 mandates and an electoral code offered on the table by the same people who claimed they would overthrow him.
In this context, Basha's result in the May 11 elections cannot be treated in isolation. It was shaped in a hostile terrain, filled with fake news, continuous lynchings, organized attacks, media slander and a total information blockade. It took place on an uneven field, where one side had at its disposal the official assets created by the 2021 result. Precisely from Basha's contested result. Of course, Basha and his people should analyze and see that result as a way to reflect and learn lessons from what they did wrong and should have done differently.
However, today what is clearly seen is that Basha's political "karma" stands like a sword on Berisha's "head" to demand accountability for what they promised to restore and brought about, confronting their lies and deceptions, which they had once unjustly blamed on others.
