Pediatric emergencies increase, 250 cases per day. Viral infections dominate

Over 250 children per 24 hours seek help at the Pediatric Emergency Department of the University Hospital, mainly with upper respiratory tract infections and gastrointestinal disorders.

Every day, around 25 children are hospitalized for long-term treatment, of which 6–7 are from the districts, knowing that this is also a national emergency.

Pediatrician Albert Koja says that despite the dominance of viral infections, those of a bacterial nature, as well as poisonings, are not far behind.

" The most common diagnoses are those of the summer season, gastroenteritis, accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, sometimes both together and fever, but viral infections predominate. There are also bacterial infections from salmonella, shigella, which also require antibiotic therapy, " says Dr. Koja.

This season, children have also fallen prey to insect bites or snakebites in a few cases.

" We have had two or three cases of snakebites, but they were cases without complications. They stayed for a few days and left healed, " says the pediatrician.

Doctors at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center are asking parents to monitor their children's condition at neighborhood centers or coastal locations. In cases where the temperature is not controlled by treatments for over five days, they should be referred to the hospital.
