Imitation clothing from luxury brands will no longer be imported into Albania: Conditions also for citizens' luggage, law enters into force

Traders and citizens who attempt to import counterfeit products into Albania will be blocked at customs points. The new trademark law, which entered into force on August 16, strengthens trademark protection, in line with EU standards.
Imitation products of luxury brands will no longer be allowed to enter Albania.
With a new law, Albania has strengthened measures to protect trademarks and combat counterfeiters. Any “fake” products from traders or citizens will be blocked at customs points.
The new law prohibits the import and export of goods that infringe intellectual property rights and takes measures against counterfeit goods.
In other words, any goods that come stamped with the logos of major global brands, such as Gucci, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, etc., but are imitations and not official products of these companies, will be blocked at customs.
This will be a blow to the firms that imitate these companies and the traders who until now were importing these low-quality goods without criteria, selling them at cheap prices on the market.
Likewise, travelers arriving in Albania by air, land, and sea are allowed to carry only non-commercial goods in their personal luggage, within duty free limits and without suspicious indicators.
The law establishes special protection for trademarks with a good reputation, protecting them even in cases where the goods or services are not similar.
It also gives brand owners the right to sue imitators of their products.
Article 87 even states that the trademark owner has the right to seek compensation for damages that may have been caused as a result of the unauthorized use of his trademark by abusive traders.
Owners may request the initiation of investigations by the Industrial Property Directorate for a fee if they find that another trademark is similar to their trademark.
This law is a continuation of the Albanian government's efforts to combat the "fake" goods market that has turned Albania into a second Turkey with numerous online and physical stores selling "first-class imitations" of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Dolce&Gabbana, etc.
During 2024, Customs stated that it had blocked more than 40,000 counterfeit brand products.
