Peace will be painful.

Today it's war or peace in Ukraine - and therefore in Europe! There is a lot of anticipation at the presidential summit in Washington between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, with the participation of Europeans.
If the meeting is considered successful by the American president, in the sense that he sees opportunities for an agreement with Putin, a three-presidential summit between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky could be organized within a few days, which would mark the beginning of peace negotiations.
This is no more than a (faint hope), but it is more than what could have been expected a few weeks ago! And: The key part of this hope belongs to Donald Trump.
For peace now, all involved will need to increase efforts:
-Trump, unlike his previous position, is willing for the US to engage with security guarantees for Ukraine if this would help end the war.
-Trump is not willing to secure peace by deploying American troops. This dangerous commitment must be made by the Europeans, which also means deploying German soldiers in Ukraine.
-The most difficult decisions will fall to Ukraine, because Putin wants the entire Donbas and other occupied territories as a price for a promise not to attack Ukraine or any other country in Europe again. Trump wants Zelensky's basic approval for a "territorial swap."
The big dilemma for Trump, Zelensky, and the Europeans is: you can't trust Putin an inch, but he's the only partner for a deal.
Everything indicates that this is a painful peace. The alternative is a long war.
