Vacations increased the amount of time spent in front of phone screens. Digital spaces were connected everywhere, on beaches, sun loungers, bars, restaurants and hotels by both adults and very young children. For ophthalmologists, the finding is painful because eye health, although it has all the premises to calm down and improve naturally during vacations, degrades at a frightening pace.

"What upset me the most was that everyone was glued to their cell phones, not just the parents but also the children of all ages, and what scared me the most were the 3-year-old children who should not have a phone in their hands at all due to the extraordinary damage that the screen causes to their developing eye muscles," said ophthalmologist Suzana Zhuka.

According to the doctor, from interviews with patients, children double the time they spend in front of screens during vacations.

"This is a total addiction. The average daily time spent on the phone is over 4 hours, and this is alarming for eye health," said ophthalmologist Zhuka.

Myopia is the alarm of modern times, as one of the most widespread diseases in children. International study forecasts show that by 2050, 4 in 10 children will be myopic.

"Today in Albania, 7 out of 10-15 children are wearing glasses and this is a very high statistic. A nationwide program is needed to raise awareness among parents where screen time schedules are clearly defined. My message is: Protect children while it's not too late. The disease does not come in a day or a month. It develops over time," she said.

With the arrival of September, children enrolling in first grade begin mandatory eye exams, a screening that has shown increasing numbers of vision problems in this age group every year.
