Rice water has become a huge trend on TikTok, with users posting videos on how to create and apply rice water to achieve the enviable skin of women from Japan and Korea. In fact, it’s an ancient ingredient that has been used for centuries in Asian countries as a skin and hair care ingredient. It’s said that women in China, Korea, and Japan have relied on rice water formulas for over 2,000 years to achieve porcelain skin and lush hair.
What rice water does for the skin, according to science
It seems that the habits of Far Eastern women have a scientific basis. According to a previous study that examined the benefits of rice water, “isolated components from rice, as well as its individual components, have broad potential for use in skin care products and cosmetics.” The report, which summarized a number of published studies, noted that individual components of rice include phenolic compounds, betaine, squalene, tricine, and rice bran.

Even better, rice water is an easy, affordable, and above all, natural home remedy that contains no chemicals.
The appeal of rice water for the skin lies not only in its positive effects, but also in its ease. Although recipes and tips vary slightly, it is generally prepared by soaking raw rice in cold water and then draining it. The remaining water can then be applied as a toner or face mask. You can leave it in the water for about 30 minutes for the simple version, or you can follow the fermentation method, leaving it at room temperature for 1-2 days until it takes on a slightly sour smell, then store it in the refrigerator.
Some bold influencers have even frozen rice water, which they then use to tone and tighten their skin. Korean beauty influencer Ava Lee takes her beauty routine a step further. First, she rinses the rice three times and soaks it in water for four hours, then stores the remaining water in the refrigerator. To apply it, she takes cotton pads for makeup removal, wets them, and gently exfoliates.
The influencer also suggests using rice water to create your own mask at home. All you have to do is dip cotton pads in it and then leave them on your face for about 15 minutes for baby-soft, hydrated skin.
