The Hague/ The Special Court extends Thaçi's detention. The judge's claims

The detention of Hashim Thaçi, Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj and Fadil Fazliu by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague has been extended.
These decisions were made yesterday, August 5, by the pre-trial judge, Marjorie Masselot, with the reasoning that they should remain in detention for proportionate and necessary reasons, for which she said to Thaçi that the risk of obstructing the proceedings with the closure of the Prosecution's case in the war crimes case has not yet disappeared.
The pre-trial judge said that suspicions still persist against Thaçi for committing the criminal offenses for which he is charged.
"Thaci's actions demonstrate persistence in his efforts to obstruct the proceedings of the KLA, including from within the KLA Detention Center, including through his influence over former KLA members who remain loyal to him and individuals from his political circles, as co-defendants in this case," the decision states.
Sophie Menegon and Luka Mishetić, representing Thaçi's defense, have not filed a response to the Prosecution's request for the extension of his detention. We recall that the Special Court filed a second indictment against Thaçi in December 2024 for obstruction of justice./ Kosovapress
