Mariah Carey and the Grammy "mystery": Why has she only won 5 out of 34 nominations?

With over 220 million albums sold and 19 No. 1 hits on Billboard, Mariah Carey is one of the biggest names in pop music. But in 34 Grammy nominations, she has won only five times, a disparity the singer calls "intentional."
In her latest statements, Carey does not hide her disappointment: “The Grammys are overrated,” she said, while in 2023 she added that the Academy “played with me.” For her, commercial success and cultural impact have never been fairly reflected on this awards scene.
Although she received an honorary award in 2024, Carey greeted it with irony: " Is this a real Grammy? I haven't seen one in a while."
Meanwhile, the public has not stopped rewarding her: with dozens of other important awards and a repertoire that includes one of the most successful songs of all time, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," Carey's legacy remains undisputed, with or without a Grammy.
