Around 10,000 square kilometers of forests are burned by fires in Europe, with Spain and Portugal the most affected countries.

Spain and Portugal are at the epicenter of one of the most devastating fire seasons in Europe ever recorded.
Data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) shows that as of August 19, around 9,670 square kilometers of land had burned across the EU this year, almost three times the average for the period 2006-2024.
Southern Europe, especially Spain and Portugal, is facing one of the worst fire seasons in two decades.
Spain has already lost nearly 4,000 square kilometers of forests and farmland, surpassing the previous record of 3,060 square kilometers burned in 2022.
Portugal has seen over 2,610 square kilometers destroyed, almost double the number last year.
Spain's civil protection chief warned that the fires continue to pose a direct threat to populated areas, while Defense Minister Margarita Robles described "air operations" as difficult due to thick smoke.
The 16-day heatwave is the third longest ever recorded and brought temperatures to 45 degrees Celsius over the weekend, according to the Spanish state weather agency Aemet.
